Bonnygate Women's Group

Bonnygate Women's Group mission is to preserve Jamaica's cultural heritage by promoting and teaching traditional needlecraft techniques. The group empowers women by providing them with the skills and resources needed to generate income and become self-sufficient to include women with disabilities. Bonnygate Women's Group also fosters community growth and development through vocational training and economic empowerment. By achieving these goals, the Bonnygate Women's Group seeks to make a positive impact on the lives of it's members and the bordering parishes of St. Mary and St.Ann.   The Bonnygate Women's Group is presently embarking on expansion to include establishing a storefront gallery showcasing handmade items crafted by the women.

Mission/Impact Statement

Bonnygate Women's Group aims to revive traditional Jamaican needlecraft industries, such as hand embroidery, crochet and hardanga, while empowering women in rural communities to earn a sustainable income. Bonnygate Women's Group takes a holistic approach to women in development and empowerment.

Current Needs

If awarded this assistance the group will be able to accomplish incomplete goals. The group seeks to secure a storefront/ gallery to display and sell their craft for $30,000US. To obtain all necessary equipment and supplies 5,000US would achieve this goal. For training materials and preparation of store goods $5,000US would be sufficient.

Awards/Honors

Our Mission is supported by the Digicel Foundation, and the group was granted fundings to develop skills and improve our socio- economic well-being. We are also a registered member of the Social Development Commission (SDC) to assist with the growth and expansion of local economic initiatives operating primarily at the Community level.

Key Services or Activities

Key services of Bonnygate Women's Group include training of needlecraft to include hand embroidery, hardanga and crochet. Bonnygate Women's Group also takes a holistic approach to women in development by incorporating empowerment workshops in business management, entrepreneurship, marketing skills and organizational strengthening and capacity building. The Group places emphasis on community development which includes workshops on domestic violence and other community growth opportunities.
