Founded in 1882 , the Alpha Boys School has offered educational and training opportunities to vulnerable youth for over 100 years. The institution's music programme has helped to launch the careers of legendary musicians like Dizzy Reece, Don Drummond, and Yellowman. It transitioned into a vocational training centre in 2014, and the school now provides high-quality training to at-risk young men (16-19 years old) in the areas of barbering, carpentry, music performance and screen-printing. Students get hands-on experience through practical activities and internships. With many having previously dropped out or been excluded from traditional schools, AVTC is a last chance for failing students to gain a post-secondary education.

    In response to the construction industry's growing demand for plumbers, AVTC will pilot a new Plumbing Skills Training Programme. Upon successful completion, the HEART/NSTA Trust has agreed to provide annual funding for program sustainability. Your contribution will convert an AVTC classroom into a fully-equipped plumbing training facility and engage a skilled trade instructor

Mission/Impact Statement

To strengthen the personal, academic and vocational competencies of at-risk Jamaican youth in order to create opportunities for them to become certified trade professionals as well as principled, contributing members of society.

Current Needs

(1) US$7,000: Set up workshop for plumber training. (2) US$1,150: purchase training equipment, tools and consumables. (3) US$500: Purchase learning supplies (books, visual aids). (4) US$5,000: salary for plumbing instructor - partial contribution.

Key Services or Activities

Trade training programmes include music performance (i.e. one of Jamaica's most renowned music training programmes, barbering, and carpentry and screen-printing. The school provides opportunities for practical training in high-quality learning facilities. Trade courses are certified by the HEART/NSTA Trust, Royal School of Music and City & Guilds. AVTC also offers City & Guilds certifications in academic courses like English, Mathematics Skills, Computer Studies, and Entrepreneurial Skills.
